Environment & Petroleum:
During the past 70 years the world’s economy has run almost entirely on fossil fuels. Today, these resources supply the 80% of the world’s energy needs. This reality will probably continue for the upcoming decades. Nevertheless, while fossil fuels provide a stable electricity and the necessary mobility, in order to keep our lives and to drive our economies, they also release billions of Tonnes of carbon dioxide, CO2, into the atmosphere, thereby accelerating the global warming.
Experts agree that we must reduce our expected emissions by at least 50% over the next 20 years. But, with the world’s energy demand, which is expected to increase by 50% by 2030, can we really generate a portfolio of renewable energies that allow us to satisfy the demand of the growing population, without irreversible damages to the planet?
We're still on time, but the world's small window of opportunity to address climate change is closing rapidly (COP25)
